Monaghan’s vibrant town centre is evident through the variety of mixed uses that are set in its traditional street pattern, which also provides a stage for a number of festivals in the town throughout the year.

Access

Monaghan is strategically located at the intersection of the N2 Dublin-Derry and N54, linking Dublin to the North-West and Belfast to the Midlands respectively. The town is also located along the east-west corridor linking Dundalk and Newry to Sligo. Recent upgrade works to the national road network provides improved access times to airports and ports along the eastern seaboard.

Business Space

Monaghan Town has 253 hectares of lands zoned for Industry & Employment. Significant land parcels have been included along the town bypass to the east of the town, providing easily accessible links to the main road network. This includes Knockaconny Business & Technology Park a thirty acre serviced industrial hub, which hosts Monaghan Mushrooms new facility, M Tek 1 and 2 offices, a newly built IDA Advanced Technology Unit and Bioconnect Research and Innovation Centre. . Additional land banks are also zoned to the north, east and south of the town providing a range of opportunities for investment.

Industrial/commercial facilities are available at the Monaghan Retail and Business Park at Cornacassa, located just one mile from the town centre on the N54 Cavan Road and at the Milltown Business Park on the edge of the town. Various other commercial premises are available throughout the town. 

The M:TEK buildings, developed by the Monaghan County Enterprise Fund, located along the N12 Armagh Road provide over 5,000 square metres of business incubator units, office accommodation and meeting facilities in various unit sizes.

Information & Communications Technology

The Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) has been provided throughout the town. The area served can be viewed at www.enet.ie/coverage.html 
Project Kelvin is also available in the town which offers dedicated Ethernet at all speeds, including 10G LanPhy, which allows for 10.3215 gigabits of capacity. The cable has the ability to directly and securely connect to Canada, US, UK and mainland Europe.

The M:TEK buildings located along the Armagh Road are part of the Armagh Monaghan Digital Corridor with a broadband 1 Gb link between the A:TEK (Armagh) and M:TEK.

Water/Wastewater services

Monaghan Town has ample provision for water supply and treatment. The town’s current demand for drinking water is 2,900 m³/day with a treatment capacity of 6,200 m³/day.

The town’s wastewater treatment plant has a plant design of 43,833 population equivalent (P.E.) and is currently catering for 16,533 P.E.

Education and Skills

The town and surrounding area is well served by a network of pre-school and primary schools and has five secondary schools located within the town offering a high quality education. The town is also served by Monaghan Institute which offers both full- and part-time vocational courses for post Leaving Certificate and mature students.

 All programmes are modular and have internationally recognised certification from FETAC, CACHE, ITEC, City & Guilds, etc. The training facility has strong links to local business/industry/commerce. 

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) the third level institution for the region is located less than one hour’s drive from Monaghan. The town is also accessible to a range of other third level institutions, both north and south of the border.

Population

Monaghan Municipal District has a population of 22,000. The town & immediate environs has a population of 10,000.
